Tense Buster

Break through the grammar barrier

Tense Buster, Clarity’s most popular program, helps learners develop their confidence with 33 key grammar areas from the simple present at Elementary level to phrasal verbs at Advanced. The program is ideal either as a self-access resource, or integrated into a course of study and used in class or for homework.

The Tense Buster syllabus, available here (descarga ClarityEnglish_TenseBuster_Syllabus.pdf), follows a logical progression from Elementary level (A2) through to Advanced (C1) that mirrors the coverage of most international course books. Within each unit, learners both encounter and use the target language in a variety of text types from radio broadcasts to quizzes to newspaper articles. Each unit includes both controlled practice exercises and freer activities to do away from the computer.

Grammar in context. Each unit begins with a presentation based on a dialogue, story or interview, where learners are encouraged to form theories about how the grammar works.
The rule. Next comes a grammar rule where they confirm or correct their theories.
Form and function. Learners then move on to practice activities in which the language is contextualized and key aspects of form and function are highlighted.
Final test. Each unit concludes with a randomised test, enabling students to gauge their progress.

Some key features

Each unit includes work on the pronunciation associated with the grammar area, for example pronunciation of “going to” as “gonna”.

The program includes detailed feedback in exercises to help students understand where they went wrong, so they can avoid making the same mistakes in future.

Popular… and fun

The British Council described Tense Buster as “very popular with students, attractive and easy to use”, and adopted the program for all its teaching centres worldwide.
