Overview
Most teachers love reading, but it can be a challenge to generate the same enthusiasm in our students. This is what Active Reading sets out to achieve. Throughout the program, learners work with texts which are relevant, stimulating and lively (topics include travel, fashion, gaming) each with a range of thought-provoking activities.
Content
The program comes at six levels from Elementary to Advanced, with ten units in each level. Each unit has a topic and a focus on a reading skill or subskill. At the lower levels these include vocab strategies and understanding your purpose for reading. At the Advanced level students learn to infer meaning in a text and study structure and organisation.
Approach
Video intro. Each unit starts with a teacher explaining the reading skill, why it is useful, and the context in which learners will approach it.
Practice activities. Next comes controlled practice where, for example, students might arrange vocab into sets for learning, or write topic sentences for paragraphs.
Comprehension. Each unit has a comprehension activity focusing on the target language skill.
Extension activities. Finally there is a freer activity which expands on the topic and which may include other skills such as speaking or Internet search.
