Study Skills Success

Preparing to study in English

Overview

Critical thinking, independent learning, avoiding plagiarism… These are all academic study skills students need to develop as they move into post-16 studies at school, and on to higher education. Study Skills Success helps not just with the skills, but also with the English that underpins them.

Content

The program covers the following study skills: Independent learning, Critical thinking, Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Grammar, Vocabulary, Visuals and Research. All are approached in an academic context. For example, the Listening unit helps with lectures; the Speaking unit with seminars and presentations.

Approach

Video intro. Each unit begins with a video of both teachers and students explaining the challenges learners will face.

Skills development. The unit then takes learners through a series of activities, helping them to develop the skills and strategies they need to meet these challenges.

Multiple contexts. Each skill is tackled in multiple contexts. For example the Research unit looks at the research process, evaluating websites, note-taking and citations.

Learning record. At the end of each topic, the Learning Record encourages students to reflect on what they have learned in the unit.
